Wing beach is on the northern end
of the Tanapag lagoon. The dive is
done by both boat and shore and is
only available for 2 to 3 months a
year during late Spring and early
Summer. The reason for this is the
heavy surf the rest of the year.
Getting in and out from shore can
prove to be a challenge at times
and even on a calm day the water
flowing out of the reef can feel like
a river. The rope is almost always
needed to pull yourself back up
through the water flowing out of
the lagoon.
The walk from the parking lot is the
longest of all the Saipan shore dives
and takes a few minutes. The site is
generally done between 2 cuts in
the reef with a wall between the
two. The profile that we like the
best is to enter the water at the
rope. This is in the first cut which
has a bottom between 20 and 30 ft.
We take our time here and look for
Eels and we almost always see free
swimming Lion Fish of differing
kinds.
Then we head right along the wall
which will gradually drop down to
over 100ft near the entrance to the
second and much larger cut. We
like to go along the wall deep on
the way out. This cut is very
dramatic with lots of different
things to look at. It has a pinnacle
at the end of it and I would
recommend doing the dive at least
twice and approaching it from the
deep end and then again from the
top to enjoy the totally different
views. On the way back with the
wall to our left we stay shallow at
about 30 to 50 ft. When we get
back to the first cut we spend our
remaining time just looking around
or going to the other side of the cut
which is a shallow coral garden with
lots of fish and many Eels.
